Why Our Camps End at Midday

Why Our Camps End at Midday

One of the most common questions we receive each summer is: “Why aren’t your camps longer?

It Comes Down to Safety

It’s a fair question – especially for working parents who are balancing busy schedules. And while we understand the desire for longer formats, our decision to end camp at lunchtime is intentional. It comes down to safety.

Georgia Heat Is Real

Summers in Georgia are hot, humid, and often oppressive – especially in an open farm setting. We do not have air conditioning to retreat into when temperatures climb.

Many children spend much of their summer indoors in climate-controlled environments. Extended outdoor exposure, especially combined with activity, can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Those risks are real – and we take them seriously.

Farms Are Physical Places

Camp at WildeWood Farm is active. Children walk, groom, carry equipment, ride, move between pastures, and participate in hands-on learning. Even when it doesn’t look intense, it is steady physical movement.

It would not be responsible to continue that activity during the hottest part of the day when heat and humidity peak. We intentionally stop before midday temperatures rise to unsafe levels.

Healthy Tired Is a Good Thing

After camp, most children are pleasantly tired – physically and mentally. They have moved their bodies, focused their minds, and spent meaningful time outdoors. That kind of tired often leads to exactly what growing bodies need: quiet rest, reading time, or even a movie in the cool comfort of home. The rhythm works well – active morning, restful afternoon.

Why Our Camps End at Midday

Safety Over Convenience

We understand that longer camps can be helpful for working families. However, no activity is worth compromising a child’s well-being.

Our responsibility is to protect the children in our care. The farm will still be here tomorrow.

And we would rather send children home healthy and happily tired than overheated and exhausted. Because sometimes the most responsible choice is also the simplest one.
