Lessons

Our lesson format is a wonderful way to experience riding in a "no" pressure environment. No equipment is necessary at first, If you fall in love with riding, then you can purchase boots and a helmet. Our lesson Program is based on a combination of disciplines, as well as safety for both the rider and the horse. It includes a base of balanced riding and dressage and then focuses on hunter equitation or basic western. We feel that riders need to know and understand the basics before attempting jumping or the show ring.

We strive to keep our learning environment positive and conducive to excellence. Lessons are kept fun but challenging. The students are encouraged through positive motivation (no yelling, screaming, foul language, or badgering of students) to try new things, to exceed their expectations, and to encourage their fellow teammates. We find that the students learn better if the instructors are kind and soft-spoken, rather than harsh and rude. This style of instruction is especially good for beginners, timid/shy kids, and kids with mild learning disabilities. Hannah teaches on a microphone outside of the arena so the students can easily hear her, and she can coach students while seeing the whole arena at one time.

The students are also encouraged to try new horses to improve their ability to ride different types of horses. Our horses include a wide variety of breeds, ages, and talents. Many have been rescued over the years and rehabilitated. Our horses range in degrees of difficulty from babysitters to higher-level hunters and Western horses. The students move up through the different ranks of horses learning more advanced maneuvers with each new level of horse. Each horse is an individual, and each has a lesson to teach. We are diligent in creating a happy atmosphere for our horses as well. We are careful that our horses are not overworked. They receive at least 2 days off a week and a month off during the year. Our horses receive the very best of care, both physically (farrier, dentistry, and chiropractic) and emotionally

Our students are boys and girls ages 5 and up, as well as a good number of adult students. Classes are limited to four students per class (sometimes, five students). Our lessons focus on total horse care as well as riding. When the students arrive, they must first catch the horses from the pasture, lead them up to the barn and groom and tack them. then bring the horse to the arena with both horse and student ready for their lesson.. At the end of each lesson the student is able to ride one of the trails here to cool their horse down, then back to the barn to remove tack, groom the horse, feed if necessary, then return the horse to its pasture. Each step of the grooming and tacking steps are taught during the first few weeks of lessons and the instructor checks all tack before the students mount up. One third of our students also choose to show at local events on the weekends. This normally involves preparing the horse on Friday afternoon and showing on Saturday. We do not teach any lessons or attend shows on Sundays.
